From Babble to Books: Nurturing Early Literacy and Communication Skills at Thrive
Published on August 28, 2025

Have you ever watched your little one babbling away to their toys, pointing with intense focus at a passing butterfly, or trying to turn the pages of a book (sometimes two or three at a time!)? These small, everyday moments are pure magic. They are also the very first steps on one of the most important journeys of their lives: the journey to literacy.
At Thrive, we know that learning to talk, listen, read, and write is not something that begins on the first day of primary school. It begins in the cot with the first coo, in the highchair with the first shared giggle, and in the cosy corner with the first well-loved storybook. Nurturing these early communication skills is a cornerstone of the Thrive experience. It’s a responsibility we cherish, and we want to pull back the curtain and show you exactly how we build these foundations for a lifetime of learning.
The Thrive Philosophy: It All Starts with a Conversation
Before a child can read a word, they must first understand that words have power. They need to experience the joy of communication. That’s why our starting point is always a language-rich environment. But what does that actually mean?
More Than Just Words
A language-rich environment isn’t about constant noise; it’s about meaningful interaction. Our skilled practitioners are expert communicators. They model language clearly, but more importantly, they are expert listeners.
When your baby babbles, we babble back, showing them their voice is heard and valued. When your toddler points and says “dig-dig!”, we get down on their level and respond with enthusiasm: “Wow, yes! You see a big, yellow digger! It’s digging the soil with its huge scoop. What a loud noise it makes!” We expand on their words, introduce new vocabulary, and celebrate every attempt to communicate.
The Power of ‘Serve and Return’
We base our approach on the well-established ‘Serve and Return’ principle, a key practice in developing the rules of conversation and promoting strong attachments. Think of it like a game of conversational tennis. Your child ‘serves’ by making a sound, a facial expression, or a gesture. Our practitioners ‘return the serve’ by responding in a warm, attentive, and encouraging way.
This back-and-forth interaction literally builds the architecture of the developing brain, strengthening the neural connections essential for language and helping them to nurture crucial social skills. This responsive communication also helps children learn to manage their feelings and develop self-regulation.
Laying the Foundations: The Pre-Reading Toolkit
Long before a child can decode the letters on a page, they need a whole toolkit of pre-reading skills. At Thrive, we build this toolkit piece by piece through targeted, play-based activities that children adore.
Tuning into Sounds (Phonological Awareness)
Phonological awareness is a fancy term for a simple idea: the ability to hear and play with the sounds in words. It’s about recognising rhymes, clapping out syllables in a name, and noticing that ‘snake’ and ‘sausage’ start with the same slithery ‘sssss’ sound. We build this skill constantly through:
- Music and Rhyme Time: Daily sessions filled with classic nursery rhymes and action songs are fantastic for developing an ear for rhythm and rhyme.
- Sound Games: Playing games like ‘I Spy’ or going on listening walks in the garden to identify sounds (a bird tweeting, a plane flying overhead) helps children tune into the world of sound around them.
The Magic of Storytime
Storytime at Thrive is an event. It’s not a passive activity; it’s an interactive, theatrical experience. We use different voices for the characters, use puppets to bring the story to life, and pause to ask questions like, “Oh no, the Gingerbread Man is running away! Where do you think he will go next?” This transforms reading from a task into a shared adventure, fostering a deep love of books that is essential for future reading success.
Mark-Making and Motor Skills
The journey to writing begins with a scribble! Every chalk mark on the patio, every swirl in a tray of foam, and every painting is a vital step towards forming letters. We provide endless opportunities for ‘mark-making’ while also developing the crucial fine motor skills needed to hold a pencil correctly. Activities like threading beads, manipulating Play-Doh, and using tweezers to pick up small objects all build hand strength and coordination in a fun, pressure-free way, often incorporating the benefits of outdoor play.
Phonics Through Play: Where the Fun Begins!
When the time is right, we begin to introduce phonics – the relationship between letters and their sounds. Our approach is systematic, but to your child, it just feels like fun and games. We completely reject flashcards and formal lessons at this age. Instead, we weave phonics into play.
You might see our children on a ‘sound hunt’, searching the nursery for objects that begin with the ‘t’ sound. You might find them tracing letter shapes in a sensory tray filled with sand or rice, feeling the shape of the letter as they say its sound. We use multi-sensory approaches, like those found in programmes such as Jolly Phonics, which link sounds to actions, making learning physical, memorable, and joyful.
Partnering with Parents: Your Role in the Story
As early years experts, we build the foundations, but we know that you are your child’s first and most important teacher. We believe that the parent partnership is vital. We’ll always share your child’s progress with you, and we love providing simple ideas for you to try at home
The best things you can do are often the simplest: talk to your child about your day, share a book at bedtime, sing songs in the car, and point out letters you see on signs when you’re out and about. These small, consistent activities reinforce everything we do at the nursery and show your child that language and reading are a wonderful part of everyday life.
The path from babble to books is a marathon, not a sprint. At Thrive, we pave that path with conversation, curiosity, and creativity, ensuring every child has the confidence and skills they need for a seamless transition to primary school.
